Research : Laura Mulvey theory

Laura Mulvey's theory consists of  'The male gaze' , in some music video's more than others we the viewers witness the music video through the gaze of  a man . For example camera angles , edits , costume are all picked specifically to represent females as passive beings who get objectified by men. A prepresentation is the way "something" is shown by whoever makes the 'representation' , therefor it involves point of views from a number of different people. "Due to differences in power between men and women, roles such as (camera, writes and producers) are taken by men in which women are represented this reflects the male point of view and their personal ideals on how women should look. This makes the male active and the female passive"

Example of Male Gaze :

In this music video of Dizee Rascle we get all of what Laura Mulvey stated in her theory , we see frames of 'Dismembered' body parts such as : legs , bum , bikini . Never in this video do we see women covered up or shown as whole however the men are both fully dressed and given only full body shots . This strengthens Laura's theory that women are represented as passive , which in the video is seen hugely . There is a section at the beginning where we see shots of a womans sunglasses and rear end , the camera is constantly behind the woman to give off the sense of the male gaze. As the woman enters the house she passes the door guy who bltantly "checks" her out . This video objectifies women very openly . There are also one guy surrounded by many girls which furthermore proves that Laura theory is right.

Example of female gaze : My teacher gave us the task to find a music video were we saw things through a female gaze ,this meant finding a video where men are objectified without the woman sexualising herself . This was very difficult to do and i couldn't find one at all , the ones i found had dismembered male body shots but the lead singers in the video had very sexy or revealing outfits also. This only proves that the roles are never or hardly reversed so that the man is passive and objectified while the woman get's the power of leading the viewers with there gaze fully.

No evidence of either example :

This music video by Missy Elliott shows her in unflattering baggy costumes ,  cars seen as "men cars" and also edits to make her face big in certain sections . This goes against everything Laura Mulvey suggested as in this music video the men and women are seen as equals and there is NO male gaze. There are some shots of women in little clothing but they are never the main focus or are blurred out.
