Research: Venallis Theory

Carol Vernallis Experiencing Music videos. Aesthetics and cultural context

Vernalis observed that edits in music videos are much more frequent that are used in films, many stand out as disjuncture and that the editing seems to have rhythmic basis closely  connected to the song. Her main points were;
·       <!--[endif]-->Edits are much more obvious this is because the directors wants us to pay attention to them this could be wipes and special effects added.
·       <!--[endif]-->Jump cuts are often used
·       <!--[endif]-->In order to give the video a structure master shots are frequently used
·       <!--[endif]-->The camera may move in time with them
An example were jump cuts are used very often is Chris Brown - Yeah 3x, in the first 30 seconds 12 jump cuts are seen
An example were edits are obvious is Chris Brown - Don't Wake Me Up
An example was the camera moves in time with them is Chris Brown - Run It
