Research: previous year student video

Mustafa, Nick, Poppy, Charon from 283goswell on Vimeo.

The first element that i loved about this video is costume and location, they thought very hard and carefully about these 2 elements\The song used was a smart choice it suited the picture they was trying to convey.
Lip syncing- There lip syncing was in time and this continued through the whole video, when editing they thought very carefully.
Mise en scene
The costume that was used was very creative and outgoing it caught our attention which i think was the directors aim, also the mise en scene re-in forces the lyrics and the tone that is used in the song
Location - there is a variety of locations, this all fit together with the video and unites the video all in one
Camera-Long shots, over shoulder, extreme close up, close up, medium close up, tracking shot, extreme long shot are all used so as you can see a variety of shots was used
Editing - The jump cuts that was used sync with the beat which creates a uniqueness about this video, on every jump cut goes with the up tempo beat and makes us more in tuned with the video, the green screen that was used was perfect it almost made the audience feel as if they are involved also that the actor is really at that location, the use of the leopard was genius, it went along with the beat in the speed the animal ws running

RESEARCH: Student remake video

Remake of previous student music video research task.

Here is a quick tutorial task clip I have made based on using base tracks and lip-synching footage to create a music video.

In doing this video editing task I have learnt much on ho to edit using many base-tracks. I have learnt how to use markers on final cut to mark on the actual song where the first word comes in and then to mark on the different base-tracks the same point, so when dragged onto the sequence timeline, it all lines up and is in synch.

I have also learnt how to cut parts of the base track up to make the video cut at certain places to a different base-track to make the video flow. These skills I will be applying to our project when it comes to the editing of our footage.

Research:Analyse lyrics

Ive been analysing the lyrics for our chosen song and have came up with ideas in which we could include in our video. this video is about a girl being in a relationship thinking that it was going good but the feeling was not mutural.

Watching me like you never watch no one - her looking at herself in a mirror
Don't tell me that you didn't try and check out my bum
- Illustration, a long shot of her touching her bum
Cause I know that you did
Cause your friend told me that you liked it

Gave me those pearls and I thought they were uglyy - Mise en scene will be used for this line, We will purchase pearls necklace from priamrk and a pan of her throwing it on the floor re-in forcing her thoughts on it being "ugly"
Though you try to tell me that you never loved me- A drawn heart in a diary this interlinks with the next few lines
I know that you did
'Cause you said it and you wrote it down -
her writing in a diary
Dancing at discos - Jump cuts of landmarks, in which will show the actor dancing
Eating cheese on toast- Using Illustration method, filming cheese on a toast however i was thinking we could make it more int resting by making the toast burnt this will make the video more comical
Yeah you make me merry make me very very happy- Her turning in a 360 degrees circle showing her happiness
But you obviously, you didn't want to stick around- Jump cut to her looking sad and gloomy or her at a restaurant alone.
Dancing at discos
Eating cheese on toast
Yeah you make me merry make me very very happy
But you obviously, you didn't want to stick around

So I learnt from you
Do do do da do do do do do da do do do do do da do
So I learnt form you
Do do do da do do do do do da do do do do do da do

I can be alone, yeah
I can watch a sunset on my own
I can be alone, yeah
I can watch a sunset on my own
I can be alone
I can watch a sunset on my own

I can be alone, yeah
I can watch a sunset on my own
I can be alone, yeah
I can watch a sunset on my own
I can be alone
I can watch a sunset on my own

Sitting in restaurants
Thought we were so grown up
But I know now that we were not the people
That we turned out to be

Chatting on the phone
Can't take back those hours
But I won't regret
'Cause you can grow flowers
From where dirt used to be

Dancing at discos
Eating cheese on toast
Yeah you make me merry make me very very happy
But you obviously, you didn't want to stick around

Dancing at discos
Eating cheese on toast
Yeah you make me merry make me very very happy
But you obviously, you didn't want to stick around

So I learnt from you
Do do do da do do do do do da do do do do do da do
So I learnt from you
Do do do da do do do do do da do do do do do da do

I can be alone, yeah
I can watch a sunset on my own
I can be alone, yeah
I can watch a sunset on my own
I can be alone
I can watch a sunset on my own
(do do do da do do do do do da do do do do do da do)

I can be alone, yeah
I can watch a sunset on my own
I can be alone, yeah
I can watch a sunset on my own
I can be alone
I can watch a sunset on my own
(do do do da do do do do do da do do do do do da do)

Research:Music industry

The music industry is structured in a variety of forms. these include
Mainstream - Large organisations
                       Saturate market
                       high production values
                       'Majors'
Artist in mainstream is the most famous music artist this includes beyonce,Rhianna,Lil Wayne and Taylor swift, they are representing large organisation, which have a saturate market,

Another form of music industry is independent
"Independent music is music produced independently from major commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, a process that may include an autonomous, Do-It-Yourself approach to recording and publishing. While the term indie is sometimes used as if it were a music genre, independent music artists do not fall into a single, defined musical style or genre and usually create music that can be categorized into other genres@
-Small organisations
niche genres and specific market
operate independently to mainstream

Owners of the music
If the artist is apart of a record label then the owner will be the record label however if they are an independent artist then in a sense they  are their own owner
Aims of artist
To be signed to a record label
To promote their name to their target audience
Sell their albums

Ownership
From 1960s- 1990's - The big 6

Late 1990s- The big 5

2004- The Big 4

2012- The Big 3
This is the final big 3, as you can see over time it has decreased over time=.

Current situation
Sales are falling in the music industry, a decrease in sales equals to a decrease in profits, record labels are receiving less than they previously had, and this puts a strain on the music industry.

  • In 2008-2010 sales for albums drop over 100 million
  • The number of digital single on the rise

Changes in how we consumer music
There has been a change In the consumer behaviour  this has led to a change in how we consumer musics, we are now more active in our consumption of music also commercialisation of the Internet and the web. also people prefer singles than albums

Current trends
These include downloading mp3 fornatts-Itune
                                                                  Amazon
illegal downloads are easy and cheap and it is growing daily, 1.2 billion illegal downloads were shown in the Uk in 2012 alone, these are usually done by youtube mp3 converter where the consumer will get a video on youtube and convert it into a mp3

Streaming- This allows music to be delivered on demand and these include sites that are free or paid by subscription
Other possible sources are social networking sites such as
Facebook -
Twitter
Youtube
Google

Planning : Analysis of the original video

The screen grab above clearly show's that there is no "Official video" for 'Merry Happy' , this song was chosen intentionally for that reason. We didn't want to chose a song with a video because we often found ourselves unable to shake it's visual content away. For example , we were planning to chose the song 'Foundations'  by Kate Nash but when coming up with possible ideas we came to the conclusion that original ideas were running low because everytime we thought of the song we thought of the video used. In addition, the song itself won't allow us creatively to explore other options for mise en scene as the video uses illustration , it would be limiting. There by choosing 'Merry Happy' with no video we're starting from scratch , this enables us to be as creative as we want to be.

Therfor our music video for this song won't be able to differ in anyway because there's no original video for it to be different to.

Research : The Female lead

One obstacle i found quiet early on in the process was finding a leading lady to be in the music video , i asked members in the group if they wanted to be in it but they said no , and so did i .

Finding a willing person is crucial because if a person who doesn't want to be in the video is pushed into doing it , the video will feel the impact of that decision. You'll be able to notice someone who isn't comfortable with performing on screen very easily. There are risks with using someone who isn't in the same course and also doesn't go to the same college as you....

  • It might not mean a lot to them so they won't turn up
  • They might not put as much effort in the filming process
  • Might bail out last minute as they're busy
When speaking to my friend on twitter i asked for her number  ( so i can contact her and vis versa )and made sure she knew exactly what she was letting herself in for so that there isn't any surprises . I told her possible locations we might film and that we haven't decided when we're filming but that we'll discuss things with her and find out when she is free.

Hopefully now that finding our leading lady is completed i can focus on the rest of the planning, knowing that there's someone who is willing to act out my groups creation and ideas in the  music video.
